Cancer Screening

Cancer services at Well Life Clinic

Cancer is a common disease, affecting 1 in 2 people in the general population. It usually affects people in their older age and, in the majority of cases, is not caused by an inherited condition.

At Well Life Clinic, your comfort and peace of mind are our priority. We’re here to listen, support, and guide you through every step of your healthcare journey with compassionate, evidence-based care for prevention, early detection and ongoing support.

Our GPs are happy to have discussions with you around your modifiable risk factors and lifestyle changes. Our approach includes assessment of your personal cancer risk and evaluation of lifestyle factors including diet, exercise, smoking, and alcohol consumption.

We provide tailored advice on nutrition, physical activity, and reducing exposure to environmental carcinogens.

Genetic Cancer Screening

A small proportion of individuals carry an inherited gene change which can increase their chance of developing cancer. For these people, cancer is more likely to occur at an earlier age and in multiple places. The type of cancers and level of risk associated with a particular gene change can vary significantly depending on the gene involved and also the individual’s personal and family history, lifestyle, environmental and hormonal risk factors.

At Well Life Clinic we partner with Dr Anju Kulkarni, who is one of only a few Clinical Geneticists nationally to have trained at a specialist level in both Clinical Genetics and Medical Oncology, giving her an in-depth knowledge of genomics and translational medicine within cancer care.

Dr Kulkarni can carry out a consultation with you to discuss your concerns and risk factors before recommending relevant, evidence-based genetic tests. As appropriate, in follow up appointments, she can help you understand and explore:

  • The results of your genetic test and its implications for your future health and that of your family
  • The level of cancer risk associated with the gene change and/or your personal and family history
  • How your cancer risk may be influenced or modified by lifestyle, hormonal and environmental factors
  • Options available to manage your cancer risk, such as enhanced surveillance or surgical choices, and the timing of when these may be appropriate for you
  • Genetic testing or additional cancer surveillance that may be available to your family members and how they can access these avenues
  • The risk of you and your partner passing on a genetic condition to your children and the reproductive choices available to reduce this risk

Dr. Kulkarni will also discuss your options for any onward referrals and tests that may be required after your consultation and facilitate these for you if needed. These referrals and tests will likely incur separate costs. Please contact us for more information.

Prostate Tests

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men with over 52,000 diagnosed each year. 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, with the risk increasing with age, particularly for men over 50. Early detection is important as prostate cancer in its early stage often has no symptoms.

Testing can be important for men with a family history of prostate cancer, those of African or Caribbean descent and men over 50 years of age. At Well Life Clinic, we offer comprehensive prostate health assessments that include both physical examination and laboratory testing.

Our doctors can conduct a physical examination of your prostate, followed by a blood test to measure your Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) levels. This simple blood test measures the amount of PSA, a protein produced by the prostate, in your bloodstream. Results are normally available in around 48 hours. A doctor will then call you with your results. The cost of the appointment, physical examination and blood test is £249.

Breast and cervical screening

Routine screening tests like cervical smears and mammograms can detect cancer and other conditions early, improving outcomes and potentially saving lives.

Cervical Smears

Cervical cancer affects around 3,200 women each year in the UK but it is one of the most preventable types of cancer through regular screening. Nearly all (99.7%) are caused by persistent infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV).

The NHS offers cervical screening (smear tests) to women ages 25-64, but many women choose to have additional private screenings for more regular monitoring because they fall outside of the NHS age range or because they are higher risk. Regular screening can detect abnormal cell changes before cancer develops, allowing for early intervention.

Most types of HPV are symptomless. They usually clear up on their own without leading to future complications. However, if you have a certain type of high-risk HPV, it could be a sign that you're more likely to develop cervical cancer. At Well Life Clinic our GPs can do a pelvic examination and a smear test for £299, which includes the cost of the appointment and lab results. The report is sent back to our GPs normally within X days and they will call you with the results.

Breast screening

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the world. A mammogram is used to look for early signs of breast cancer when abnormalities are too small to see or feel.

If you would like to have a mammogram our team of GPs can refer you to HCA Healthcare Concierge who will call you to arrange a day and time that suits you for the test. The results will then be sent back to Well Life Clinic and a doctor will call you with the results. Please contact us for more information.

Skin Cancer Screening

Skin cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the UK, with over 100,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds is the main cause, with fair-skinned individuals, those with numerous moles, and people with a family history of skin cancer at higher risk.

There are two main categories of skin cancer:

  • Non-melanoma skin cancers include basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). These are the most common types, accounting for about 95% of all skin cancers. They typically develop on sun-exposed areas like the face, ears, hands, and scalp. While rarely life-threatening, they can cause significant disfigurement if left untreated.
  • Melanoma is less common but more serious, as it can spread to other parts of the body if not caught early. It often appears as a new mole or a change in an existing mole. The UK has one of the highest rates of melanoma in Europe, with cases increasing faster than any other common cancer.

Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes for all skin cancers. We recommend regular self-examinations and professional skin checks, particularly for those with risk factors.

Common warning signs of skin cancer include:

  • A new growth or sore that doesn't heal within 4 weeks
  • A spot or sore that hurts, is itchy, bleeds, crusts or scabs for more than 4 weeks
  • A mole that changes in size, shape or colour
  • Any mark that looks unusual or different from your other moles

At Well Life Clinic, all of our doctors are able to look at an area of your skin that you feel isn’t quite right. We also offer expert minor surgical procedures for a variety of conditions, including mole removals, cyst excisions, and skin biopsies. Our skilled team ensures that each procedure is performed with the utmost precision and care, using advanced techniques to minimise discomfort and promote quick recovery. The tissue is then sent off to our specialist laboratory for histological analysis, with results through normally within a week. The doctor will then call you with the results. The cost for this procedure with histology is from £575.

Additional Cancer Services

Colorectal / Bowel Cancer Screening

Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK, with over 42,000 people diagnosed each year. We can provide testing kits for FIT (Faecal Immunochemical Test) which is less invasive than colonoscopy, and is done through a stool sample. The FIT test can detect tiny amounts of blood in your stool that may not be visible, which could be an early sign of colorectal cancer. Higher risk individuals or those with a raised FIT test result can then be referred for colonoscopy through the HCA Concierge Service.  FIT tests cost £150 with results normally through within a week.

Testicular Cancer

Testicular cancer is relatively rare but is the most common cancer in men aged 15-49. Finding a lump in your scrotum can be incredibly concerning. Our men's health specialist GPs can carry out a thorough examination and refer on for further testing for any concerning symptoms. We can also teach you how to perform regular self-examinations, which are crucial for early detection.

Ovarian Cancer Risk Assessment

Ovarian cancer often presents with vague symptoms that can be mistaken for common digestive issues. Our women's health specialists offer comprehensive risk assessments including medical history evaluation, physical examination, and the CA-125 blood marker test, as well as ultrasound scan referrals.

We place special emphasis on women with risk factors such as being over 50, family history of certain cancers, or genetic predisposition. Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes for this serious condition. Come and see a GP if you have any concerns.
