Ring pessaries are devices that are inserted into the vagina to support the pelvic organs. It is often used for women with pelvic organ prolapse, where the bladder, womb or bowel can push down into the vaginal area and cause issues.
We provide private ring pessary fitting and removal in a discreet and supportive environment. Your women’s health clinician will assess your symptoms, explain the fitting process and assist in determining whether a ring pessary is suitable for your needs.
Pelvic organ prolapse can feel different for different people. Some women feel a mild pressure, and others feel a visible bulge or discomfort that affects daily activities. If you have any of the below, a ring pessary appointment may help:
Your clinician will talk through your symptoms in detail and advise whether pessary support may be appropriate.
A ring pessary works by sitting inside the vagina and providing support to the pelvic tissues. It won’t cure prolapse but can help relieve symptoms while in place.
Some women find a pessary makes it easier for them to walk, exercise or do their daily activities. It could also be considered if you don’t want surgery, are waiting for specialist care or would prefer a reversible treatment option.
Getting the correct size of pessary is important. A pessary should be tight enough to stay in place, but not tight enough to cause pain, pressure or irritation.
Your clinician may need to try several sizes to get the most comfortable fit. After fitting you may be asked to walk, cough or move slightly to check that the pessary feels supportive and stays in position.
During the appointment, your clinician will ask you about your symptoms, medical history, history of prolapse treatment, menopause status, vaginal discomfort, bleeding, infections and any previous pessary use.
Usually a gentle vaginal examination is required before fitting. If a ring pessary is suitable it will be fitted carefully and checked for comfort. You will be advised what to expect afterwards and whether any follow-up may be required.
Many women are anxious about a pessary fitting especially if it is their first visit. Your clinician will go through each step with you before the event and will not proceed without your consent.
Well Life Clinic respects your comfort and dignity. You can ask questions, ask for a break or discuss any previous discomfort or concerns before the exam begins.
You may need to take a ring pessary out to clean it, replace it, check it or if it is uncomfortable. Some women also opt for removal if they want to stop using the IUD, change the treatment approach, or discuss other options. If you have any of the below, then you may need to remove it:
If symptoms appear to be atypical or worrying, it is important to seek clinical assessment rather than ignoring the symptoms.
Removal of the ring pessary is generally a quick procedure . Your clinician will carefully remove the pessary by gently examining the vagina. Most women experience a little pressure or short-term discomfort, but the procedure is usually quick.
Once your pessary is removed, your clinician may examine the vaginal tissues and discuss whether the pessary should be replaced, resized, left out or changed to another treatment plan.
Regular review is important in the use of a ring pessary. At follow-up appointments it can be checked that the pessary is still comfortable, in the right position and not causing irritation.
Your clinician may talk to you about vaginal dryness, menopausal changes, discharge, bleeding patterns and if any additional treatment may help support comfort. Follow up advice will depend on your symptoms and the type of pessary used.
A ring pessary is usually tolerable for most women, but some symptoms should be assessed immediately. These are new or worsening pain, bleeding, offensive discharge, fever, difficulty passing urine, bowel changes or a pessary that keeps falling out.
If you are not sure whether your symptoms are normal, it is safer to arrange a review. We can assess the problem and advise whether removal, replacement or further investigation is required.
